Steps for Closing Your Pool

Stains, corrosion and scale can create problems for your pool, especially when it's closed during winter. By using the right products and following the procedures below, you will be able to protect your pool during the colder seasons. Climates vary, so be sure to ask your local authorized dealer for region-specific winterizing instructions.

  • Take a water sample to your authorized dealer and get a complete water analysis. Follow your dealer's instructions so you can balance your water as needed.
  • Clean your pool by brushing the walls, skimming the water surface and vacuuming the pool bottom. Clean pool wall tile and/or vinyl with a cleaner. Empty pump and skimmer baskets.
  • Clean or backwash your filter using a filter cleaner and degreaser. Follow the instructions on their labels.
  • Protect your pool water using a shock treatment. Then run the pump for a few hours to disperse the product thoroughly.
  • Protect your pool against algae with the addition of an algaecide. Then add a product to remove metal contaminants from your pool's water. Run your pump for several hours to disperse product.
  • Lower the water in the pool down to the recommended winterizing level.
  • Drain water from equipment such as pump, filter, heater, chlorinator, hoses and pipes as recommended. Ask your dealer if you should protect the pipes and equipment with a non-toxic, swimming pool antifreeze. Ladders, chlorinator (if offline model), pump and skimmer baskets should be stored.
  • Cover the pool using a quality cover to prevent leaves, dirt and debris from accumulating in the pool.

After consulting your dealer, you may decide to leave your pool open during the winter months. If so, here is the recommended minimum:

  • Operate the pump a few hours a day or continously if the temperature gets down to freezing.
  • Maintain a normal pH and minimum free chlorine levels.
  • Keep your pool free of leaves, dirt and debris.
